Diagnosis (5 of 5): The raw emotions of an Aspergers diagnosis at 46

This is the final video in my Diagnosis Diary. It is the 12 hours around finally getting an Autism Spectrum Diagnosis in my 40's. To be clear, my diagnosis is PDD-NOS but for sake of ease I use the term Aspergers.

This is a clip of a longer video where I share all the raw emotions around getting an Aspergers (technically PDD-NOS) diagnosis in my 40's. For so many of us the immediate reaction is a huge sense of relief. Getting validation and an explanation for so many of the things I had struggled with lifted a huge weight from me and allowed me to feel a kind of self love I hadn't felt before.

Here is the line to the full video:

*at some points in the video I refer to and compare myself to "normal" people this was a poor choice of wording on my part what i should have been saying is "neurotypical" or "those free from anxiety etc" there really is no such thing as normal and none of us should strive to achieve it xx

How to Help a Child with Asperger's Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Down Syndrome, Trisomy 21

Asperger's Syndrome Treatment, Cerebral Palsy Treatment, ADHD, Autism, Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)...

Parents from around the world have helped their children with Trisomy 21, commonly referred to as Down syndrome, to move along the path to wellness.

Using the programs developed by The Institutes, children diagnosed with Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) have been able to significantly improve their ability to learn, to communicate, to solve problems and, in some cases, to perform at age level or above.

Children with Trisomy 21, also labeled as having Down syndrome, have a pattern of malformations that are pathogenetically related. It was believed that these genetic problems were the complete explanation as to why these children could not function as well as other children. As a result, it has been assumed that they could not be treated or helped.

This is not the case.

The Institutes does not treat the genetic disorder. However, these children are brain-injured as a result of their genetic problems. Those injuries may be mild, moderate, severe, or profound, just as they are in other brain-injured children.

1. The Institutes is a group of nonprofit institutes founded by Glenn Doman in 1955. The Institutes serves children from all over the world. It is internationally known for its pioneering work in child brain development and for its programs to help brain-injured children achieve wellness and well children achieve excellence.

2. The objective of The Institutes is to take brain-injured children, however severely hurt, and help them to achieve normality physically, intellectually, physiologically, and socially. The majority of children achieve one of these goals, and many children achieve two of these goals. Some children achieve all of these goals, and some children achieve none of these goals. 2. Historically, children diagnosed with developmental delay, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, learning problems, dyslexia and a host of other symptomatic diagnoses have been considered hopeless. Thousands of parents have come to The Institutes to learn how to help their children at home. Those parents have proven beyond any doubt that brain-injured children are not hopeless, but instead have tremendous potential. The Institutes exists to insure that all brain-injured children have a fighting chance to be well.

Treatment for a Child with Asperger's Syndrome

Those parents have proven beyond any doubt that brain-injured children are not hopeless, but instead have tremendous potential. The Institutes exists to insure that all brain-injured children have a fighting chance to be well.

The Institutes does not treat genetic problems, but children who have such problems are also brain-injured. They have the same chance of improvement that other hurt children have. For many of these children their neurological problems are more significant than their genetic differences.

1. The Institutes is a group of nonprofit institutes founded by Glenn Doman in 1955. The Institutes is internationally known for its pioneering work in child brain development and for its programs to help brain-injured children achieve wellness and well children achieve excellence.

2. Historically, children diagnosed with developmental delay, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, learning problems, dyslexia and a host of other symptomatic diagnoses have been considered hopeless. • Thousands of parents have come to The Institutes to learn how to help their children at home. The Institutes serves children from all over the world. • The majority of children achieve one of these goals, and many children achieve two of these goals. Some children achieve all of these goals, and some children achieve none of these goals. 3

4. Evaluation • When The Institutes began there was no reliable evaluation procedure for hurt children. Glenn Doman and the staff developed the first reliable set of procedures to evaluate children with neurological problems. The Institutes Developmental Profile measures the growth and development of the brain. This Profile allows us to evaluate a child and make an exact comparison between the hurt child and his well peers. This provides an accurate rate of growth for the child and establishes a baseline against which each child can be evaluated to determine his progress. Each time a child returns to The Institutes, a new Developmental Profile is done and a new program is created based upon that Profile.

5. Treatment • When The Institutes began more than half a century ago there was no effective treatment for children with neurological problems. Instead hurt children were often medicated, warehoused, and forgotten. Glenn Doman and his early team wanted to give every child a chance to be well no matter how severely injured a child might be. After each child was carefully evaluated and a functional diagnosis was made, the staff designed an individual program that would provide the appropriate sensory stimulation and to give the maximum motor opportunity to use the new information so gained.

Improving Aspergers/Autism – ASD

Based on Dr. Levinson's research, overall improvements occur in ASD by enhancing their cerebellar functioning and so decreasing their coexisting signal-scrambling impairment.

Harold Levinson, M.D. is a world-renowned psychiatrist and neurologist. He is credited with bringing about a dramatic medical breakthrough in the understanding, diagnosis and successful treatment of dyslexia and its many related signal-scrambling disturbances of the inner-ear and the cerebellum.

Dr. Levinson began his dyslexia research over 30 years ago within the New York City Board of Education. Formerly Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at New York University Medical Center, Dr. Levinson is now Director of The Medical Dyslexic Treatment Center (also called The Levinson Medical Center For Learning Disabilities) in Great Neck, NY. Dr. Levinson's research has been published in many scientific and peer-reviewed journals and reviewed by top media including The New York Times, Science, TIME, Smithsonian, "The Today Show" and "Larry King Live."

The Levinson Medical Facility for Dyslexia or LD is highly unique. For those children and adults with Dyslexia or LD, ADHD, Anxiety/Phobias and related disorders, an appointment at our Medical Center would ensure all with an accurate diagnosis. Most important, the test results will lead to rapid and often dramatic improvements in 75--85% of medically treated individuals. When effective non-medical therapies are added, 100% will benefit.

ADD/ADHD & Asperger's Treatment in Troy / Rochester MI : Call 800-693-1916

Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have no known cause, but have a variety of identifying signs. The most common symptoms are:

- trouble concentrating or maintaining attention, particularly on tasks that are routine, boring, or mundane

- Hyperactivity (which may manifest as difficulty sitting still or fidgeting)

- Impulsivity (such as interrupting during conversations or acting without thinking

- Most individuals have these symptoms from time to time (viewed as normal), however what differentiates normal persons from those individuals with ADD/ADHD is that for the person with ADD/ADHD, it is uncontrollable, and interferes with the ability to function at the level of their ability, form lasting friendships, and to succeed in school, work or career.

Tricia Stehle, therapist, sees patients with ADD/ADHD in Troy :

ADD/ADHD is 3x more common in boys than girls, and often manifests itself with learning disabilities, speech issues, Obsessive compulsive disorders, Tics, Oppositional defiant disorder, and other conduct is a tremendous overlap between it ADD/ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome. Asperger's syndrome has many of the same symptoms as ADD, but unlike persons with ADD, the person with Aspergers also has difficulties with engagement in social interaction, non verbal communication, and empathy. Individuals with ADD/ADHD pick up on social cues, feelings, motivations, and desires in others. Those with Asperger's generally do not.

A simple way to look at this is:

Those with ADD/ADHD know what to do, but have trouble doing it due to their inattentiveness and impulsivity.

Book | Wishing On the Midnight Star: My Asperger Brother

these books could be useful for working with a class where children with Asperger's are to be included. Staff would be reminded very powerfully of the young people's feelings and fears in being in class and school and how they will cope. The books could prompt discussions in class to help other pupils to understand more and, one hopes, target less children who are going to be different.' Rostrumalex's younger brother Nic never seems to be able to get anything right. He even invites Brianna Santos the girl Alex likes over when Alex is goofing around in his geeky pyjamas. But Alex never forgets what a special person Nic is.wishing on the Midnight Star presents the sibling's view of the joys and frustrations of having a younger brother with Asperger Syndrome, with insights into the daily adventures of an As family, and the positive coping, and loving strategies they have evolved. It is an engaging and amusing teen love story that will appeal to older and younger kids.

Autism and Aspergers Treatment Binaural beats (ADHD, SPD) With Isochronic Tones (12-15 Hz)

Autism and Aspergers Treatment Binaural beats (ADHD, SPD)Beta Brain Waves With Isochronic Tones (12-15 Hz) | Good Vibes

Frequency Used :

12.0-15.0 Beta (low) – relaxed focus, improved attentive abilities [NEU+CRI]; Treating Hyperactivity [RA] ; Sensorimotor Rhythm (SMR) – Used in the treatment of mild autism .

How to use binaural beats:

Find a comfortable place free of distractions. It's important not to listen to binaural beats when you need to do something that requires your full attention like driving. Avoid any tasks that are mentally demanding because the meditative state is not conducive to quick, action-oriented critical thinking.

Listen to binaural beats when you want to relax, clear your mind, get your creative juices flowing, engage your intuition to help solve problems and for personal development work such as repeating affirmations and doing visualization.

Be sure to give yourself enough listening time! The brain requires about 7 minutes to entrain, or fall in sync, with the audio stimulus. Give yourself at least 15-30 minutes of listening time to experience the benefits.

You must use stereo headphones for binaural beats to work. Why? Because the 'beats' themselves are created in your brain The word binaural means "having or relating to two ears." It works like this: each ear receives a slightly different frequency at the same time, and the brain perceives the tone that is the difference of the two. If 400Hz pulses into one ear and 410 into the other, the brain will process the two sounds into a 10 Hz frequency, which happens to be the same frequency produced by the brain during meditation.

All of these frequencies, and the effects they have on the brain have been studied by scientists over the past 40 years, mainly accredited to Robert Monroe of The Monroe Institute. From the extensive research done and on the strength of Monroes' findings, he concluded that inducing brainwave frequencies through the use of binaural beats causes a wide range of effects. But Monroe is definitely not alone in his findings. There are lots of other scientists that have also noted that these lower brainwave frequencies are accompanied by deep tranquility, flashes of creative insight, euphoria, intensely focused attention, enhanced learning abilities, spiritual awareness, and so much more.

Book | Pretending to be Normal: Living with Asperger's Syndrome

Get your free

Compelling and witty, Liane Holliday Willey's account of growing to adulthood as an undiagnosed 'aspie' has been read by thousands of people on and off the autism spectrum since it was first published in 1999. Bringing her story up to date, including her diagnosis as an adult, and reflecting on the changes in attitude over 15 years, this expanded edition will continue to entertain (and inform) all those who would like to know a little more about how it feels to spend your life `pretending to be normal'.

Do I Have Aspergers? High Functioning Autism, ASD

Do I have Aspergers? I'm still confused. I've recently been told by my doctor that I am on the autism spectrum. I haven't gotten an official diagnosis, but I am assuming this means I can now say that the symptoms I've been experiencing for so many years can be given the label of Aspergers. Am I right in assuming this? Anybody with aspergers let me know if you think that's what I have. Thank you.

MY STORY: I want to help others with my story so that they can avoid the same mistakes I made. This is a shortened version of my full story. To see my full story go to my facebook: post updates there as well.

Hi, My name is PJ, I'm 24, and I've been struggling with severe acne, social anxiety and depression for ten years (since I was 14). I've just recently been told that I am on the autism spectrum. These symptoms started mild, but got increasingly worse over the years. I was covered in cystic acne by age 17. Being a shy person to begin with, this pushed me into isolation. I was extremely fearful of social situations and talking to people. My life became so painful that I couldn't function anymore. I was put on antidepressants and various acne medications (antibiotics, Proactive, retin-a). Nothing helped. Nothing actually got to the root of what was causing my symptoms. I had to do my own research to find out what was causing this. My only option was to get better.

In November 2012 I started trying to heal my body naturally and holistically on my own through diet, supplements, and exercise. I did everything: Raw vegan diet, paleo diet, switched my skin care routine to honey and natural oils, started taking tons of supplements. I even saw a naturopath, where the trial and error continued. After 9 months of trial and error and thousands of dollars spent, I had little results to show for it, but more depression.

In August 2013 I went to a functional medicine doctor to get testing done. I found out that I have low testosterone (80 year old man level), low thyroid, 20 food allergies, leaky gut syndrome, scoliosis, and low vitamin D. I cut out all my food allergies from my diet, and started taking supplements to heal my gut. In October I detoxed my body with powerful supplements and a strict detox diet.

After the detox was over I experienced chronic fatigue for 6 months (I still have CFS now). The detox threw my entire body into a tailspin. I wasn't able to do simple things we take for granted without needing a nap after, like showering or eating. Everything became extremely exhausting, and this increased my depression. This was not normal, and my doctor knew there was some kind of infection. So, I took a GI stool analysis in February 2014, and the results showed I have a SEVERE CANDIDA OVERGROWTH. This is most likely the root cause of all my symptoms I've experienced over the past 10 years. Finally I had an answer as to why I was getting worse instead of better. I am currently on my second round of treating this candida with the antifungal Nystatin and on an anti candida diet which excludes the foods that feed candida. (carbs, sugars, even fruit, vinegars, etc.)

I continue to update on my situation, what I'm doing, and the results. To follow my journey please subscribe to my YouTube follow me on Facebook:

Coming to terms with Aspergers diagnosis

I am just me, always have been and always will be but my diagnosis explains many things that have happened in my life, or more my reactions to events in my life.

It's actually quite hard coming to terms with it as I've been so set in my ways and stubborn not to admit I do the things I do up until now, I've been in denial for a very long time and unintentionally tricked you all mwahahaha!!!

Jokes aside much pride has been swallowed to talk about this openly and I'd happily sit next to those who feel I couldn't possibly be on the autistic spectrum, cross my arms and say naaa, just na. That would actually be pretty cool, looking at myself from another persons point of view!!

Anyway I hope you enjoy the video and apologies for the random F words, they just came out and I felt leaving them in there added a little randomness and a reflection of feelings which I hope doesn't take away the positive intentions of this video.

Thanks again and please follow for more videos on specific topics and how I deal with difficult situations.

this is a very useful book for any staff involved in teaching students on the autism spectrum. Its strength is its easy-to-read structure and the engaging illustrations, lists and notes. It meets the needs of many students and adults who find it hard to understand and cope with competition and unstructured events. I can strongly recommend this book to pupils between the ages of 6 and 13 years. It is a good idea for teachers or parents to read it to children and allow them to participate in the activities. It is also a good read for children who do not have Asperger's syndrome as it will help to develop their awareness.'Good Autism Practicenine-year-old Adam dreads Sports Day he usually comes last in the races and never gets chosen for the team events. So he is delighted when Mr Williams, the head teacher, announces that this year there will be an Alternative Sports Day with some very different challenges. There will be quizzes, riddles to solve, and a treasure hunt all the things that Adam enjoys. At last he'll have a chance of winning something.but as the competition runs high, how will Adam feel if his best friend Josie beats him to the Challenge Cup? And what will they do when they discover that James, the new boy in the class, is cheating?a fun and absorbing children's story, Adam's Alternative Sports Day also offers insights into how a child with Asperger Syndrome copes with the ups and downs and everyday challenges of school.

How I'm Going to Cure My Asperger's Syndrome

I am working on curing or reversing my asperger's syndrome by healing my body. I will be documenting everything I do to heal my body, and right now I'm treating a severe candida overgrowth. Let's see if this is possible. As of now I am not able to connect with other people at all, and my biggest goal is to be able to socialize and connect with others. Let's make it happen. If you think it's impossible to cure asperger's, let me show you that it is possible. I will get better.

Aspergers Symptoms - The Importance of Eating Regularly

Aspergers Symptoms - Low Blood Sugar

In the video I talk about how your Aspergers Symptoms can be made worse when your blood sugar is low.

My Aspergers Symptoms become much worse when I'm hungry and tired, and in the video I talk about how eating a little, and regularly can help reduce the impact of your Aspergers Symptoms.

It's probably no surprise that you should eat when you're hungry, right?

It IS easy to forget though, and it was a trick I didn't know for managing my Aspergers Symptoms.

I've changed when I eat and it's made a huge difference to my mood and being able to cope.

Please leave a comment and let the autistic community know how low blood sugar or energy affects your Aspergers Symptoms, and how you cope with it.

Lastly- please remember- I'm a bit chubby so try and eat healthier food than me! :)

Having Asperger's- Asperger's Syndrome from My Perspective

Hello,

My name is Debarshi Kundu, and I am a student with Asperger's Syndrome. I have encountered many unfair situations in life, been placed in and out of treatment facilities as if I am a toy, and most of all, seen things many children don't have the privilege to see. I've met people, from many different backgrounds- my clan of GT student friends, my friends who also have Asperger's, my fellow patients at the treatment centers I've attended.... the list goes on.... I've met people who are so brilliant, yet have encountered so many unfortunate situations, many of which are worse than mine. Although that doesn't make the situations I encounter ok, it is an honor to be educated with such information. After encountering so many obstacles, this is my food for thought for children with Asperger's (or any other so-called "disability") . This video is also dedicated to those people who simply fail to understand students with Asperger's Syndrome, in hopes that they see a new light.

Thank you to all those who watch this video and also try to make a difference.

Sinerely,

--Debarshi Kundu

The Difference Between High Functioning Autism and Aspergers

educational video about high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome featuring child pyschologist Allison Kawa. Allison explains that when a child reaches 8 to 9 years of age it becomes very difficult to point out substantial differences between the labels of high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome. She goes on to say that a part of autism that differs from aspergers syndrome is the language component. Most children diagnosed with autism have trouble with certain speech or language skills. However, with high fucntioning autism those language barriers are typically worked out through therapy or other means by the time the child is 8 or 9 leaving very little of any definition difference between high functioning autism and aspergers syndrome.

The characteristics and symptoms of other syndromes that often coincide with As are also discussed, for example Ad/hd, learning disorders and tics, as well as the temporary states of mental dysfunction that people with As tend to be predisposed to, including depression, anxiety, obsessive and compulsive behaviors and catatonia.this informative and encouraging text highlights the positive aspects of autism spectrum conditions, such as diligence, fairness and a knack for unique ideas, but it also acknowledges the daily challenges faced by young people with As and, crucially, offers strategies for dealing with these. Using case examples, Yoshida explores the difficulties of disclosing a diagnosis, takes readers through the stages of practicing key social skills, and offers advice on seeking support.

Autism (Aspergers) age 3- playschool footage

I'm sharing this videos for parents of children on the autistic spectrum, especially those described as Aspergers/Aspie or "high functioning" (I hate that term), as an example of toddler behaviour. Please feel free to ask questions if I can help in any way. This is me ( with the pink cardigan and red hair) toe-walking, hand flapping, and not interacting with other kids at 3. I was surprised at how obvious my symptoms were in this, the only video of me as a small child, but I had advanced language skills and this kind of autism wasn't recognised in the 80s. I appeared very social as I got older and did well at school so nobody had any reason to worry at the time. With good general parenting and a support network I managed to hide my symptoms until last year, when I discovered autism and "came out" to my family as probably autistic. This was confirmed when I received the diagnosis 2 weeks ago. The report states "her presentation could be said to be rather characteristic of women on the spectrum", although most people who meet me would never notice the difficulties, just the quirks!

Asperger's syndrome, also called Asperger's disorder, is a type of pervasive developmental disorder (PDD). PDDs are a group of conditions that involve delays in the development of many basic skills, most notably the ability to socialize with others, to communicate, and to use imagination. There is a spectrum within the PDD disorders.

Although Asperger's syndrome is similar in some ways to autism -- another, more severe type of PDD -- there are some important differences. Children with Asperger's syndrome typically function better than do those with autism. In addition, children with Asperger's syndrome generally have normal intelligence and near-normal language development, although they may develop problems communicating as they get older.

Asperger's syndrome was named for the Austrian doctor, Hans Asperger, who first described the disorder in 1944. However, Asperger's syndrome was not recognized as a unique disorder until much later.

Asperger Syndrome: Symptoms of Anxiety, Paranoia

Paranoia can be a frightening ordeal and a traumatic experiencing thing. Paranoia is a neurological response to Asperger Syndrome sufferers of panic disorder which brings the onset of anxiety and depression. The two go hand in hand together, where Asperger's is concerned. This can be confusing to some but must NOT be conflated with the symptoms associated with clinical depression. Depression exists as a different form in Asperger, alongside Anxiety than your typical diagnosis for depression. Let's all be clear on this, and some medical professionals may also take note from my personal experience :o)

Anthony Best is not like the other kids in his neighborhood. He screams at loud noises, doesnt like to be called tony, spins around in circles to have fun, and throws sand at kids in the sandbox. Other kids laugh at silly knock-knock jokes, but not Anthony; he simply stands and stares. And instead of giggling, he flaps his hands when he is happy. Anthony has Aspergers syndrome, which makes him see the world in a different way. But his friend Hannah knows that although Anthony is different and doesnt play like other kids, he has something very special insidesomething that makes him the best. When Anthony receives a new piano, his hidden talent is revealed.everyone has their quirks and traits that make them different from others, as Davene Fahy and Carol Inouye illustrate, but those differences are precisely what make us specialno matter how we interact with others. With around 1.5 percent of children in the United States diagnosed with Aspergers syndrome, Anthony Best is a useful tool for teachers, speech therapists, and parents to use in discussions with children about communication problems, accepting differences, teaching tolerance, and discovering what makes each one of us special.
