ASPERGER SYNDROME Symptoms and Treatments

Asperger syndrome (AS), also known as Asperger's syndrome, Asperger disorder (AD) or simply Asperger's, is an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) that is characterized by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, alongside restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior and interests. It differs from other autism spectrum disorders by its relative preservation of linguistic and cognitive development. Although not required for diagnosis, physical clumsiness and atypical (peculiar or odd) use of language are frequently reported.[1][2] The diagnosis of Asperger's was eliminated in the 2013 fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) and replaced by a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder on a severity scale.[3]

The syndrome is named after the Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger who, in 1944, studied and described children in his practice who lacked nonverbal communication skills, demonstrated limited empathy with their peers, and were physically clumsy.[4] The modern conception of Asperger syndrome came into existence in 1981[5] and went through a period of popularization,[6][7] becoming standardized as a diagnosis in the early 1990s. Many questions and controversies remain about aspects of the disorder.[8] There is doubt about whether it is distinct from high-functioning autism (HFA);[9] partly because of this, its prevalence is not firmly established.[1]

Asperger's:Stereotypical Repetitive Behaviour pt.1

One of the key aspects of identifying symptoms of Asperger Syndrome in the analysis of stereotypical and repetitive patterns of behaviour that can manifest itself as being one of the primary functions in Asperger Syndrome sufferers with autism. Here's my experience and understanding on this particular topic, I hope it is useful and helpful. :o)

Video link: to the Nationwide Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), children with Asperger Syndrome find it difficult to classify and express their feelings, just like those with HFA. They find it challenging to connect with others, often don't grip eye contact and have trouble reading other people's faces and gestures.

Many children with AS flap their hands, a comportment often associated with classic autism; speak without much emotion (or have otherwise rare speech patterns), need to follow schedules rigidly, and are intensely, even obsessively, interested in one exact subject, so much that they become veritable experts in that field.

Autism spectrum test

Asperger's Syndrome, now called autism spectrum complaint, level 1 in the DSM-V, affects a person's ability to communicate and socialize. People with Asperger's have medium to high IQs and may achieve great success in life, but they struggle with social gracelessness and limited nonverbal communication skills. The symptoms of Asperger's are shared by persons with a range of other disorders, so it can be tricky to diagnose.

Aspergers Syndrome and Food/ Good Nutrition MAY MANAGE Symptoms

Decades ago, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a group of developmental disabilities in which patients have significant social, communication, and behavioral difficulties, was considered rare, and the prognosis of those who had it usually wasn’t good. Many individuals were committed to institutions for the rest of their lives because of their inability to function in society. But times have changed.

Defining Autism

The word “Autism” comes from the Greek word autos, meaning “Self.”Today, autism is better defined by the term “Autism Spectrum Disorder,” which describes a grouping of various developmental disabilities.

Symptoms of ASD usually begin before the age of 3 and continue throughout a person’s life. There are three main classifications of ASD and understanding the difference among them will help to better focus treatment. The first classification of ASD is Autistic Disorder, which is considered the classic form of Autism. Patients usually have significant delays in language, social skills, and the ability to communicate. Some have unusual behaviors and interests, and have a measurable intellectual disability.

The second form of Autism is Aspergers Syndrome, usually a milder form of Autism. Patients still have delays in social abilities and communication skills, and have unusual behaviors and interests. Many individuals have a specific interest that encompasses much of their time and thought. People with Asperger’s may spend much of their time devoted to a hobby (eg, trains, computers). They usually don’t have issues with language skills or intellectual development. In fact, many are intelligent, especially when it comes to their own special interests. Some experts liken patients with Aspergers to little professors in their areas of interest; they can have near genius IQs.The third form of Autism is pervasive developmental disorder, not otherwise specified, or atypical autism. These individuals meet only some of the criteria for classic Autism or Aspergers. They have fewer, milder symptoms and may experience delays only in the areas of social skills and communication.

Is it Asperger's or Narcissism or Both?

From: ... Asperger's is often confused with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). The reason for this confusion is understandable since some of the symptoms found in people with Asperger's are also found in those with Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Book | In My Mind: From His Life with Autism, Alex Answers All Your Questions

Get your free

This unique book brings a depth of understanding of the analytical skills that 21-yr old Alex has brought to his own condition. As Alex says, "there are varying types of Asperger's and young people cannot all be squeezed into having the same diagnostic symptoms. But what they do have are some correlation to the symptoms laid out by Hans Asperger." ( Please note Asperger's may now be described as the lower end of the Autistic scale.) In his book, Alex takes each of eight symptoms and comments how these symptoms are pertinent in his life. In so doing, the reader will find similarities to those children with Asperger's that they know and will be able to reflect with new insights on what Alex is talking about. In addition to the above, Alex shares many experiences in his life that reflect his Asperger's condition from not being able to drive, social development, repetitions, panic situations, holidays, family, movies, relaxers, etc. Alex has augmented his insights with graphics that even more clearly clarify his Asperger's symptoms and sheds new ways of seeing the Asperger's condition. In reading this book, the, reader will clarify in his/her mind the characteristics common to the children that he/she knows. Along the way Alex is brought to tears in recounting the unpleasantness of his experiences. At the same time, there are moments of great hilarity in the retelling of episodes that have a sense of the comedic in them. The second part of Alex's book is a re-counting of his life experiences, explaining why he can't drive, how he relates to his family, his school experiences, the things that relax him and those which may cause him near panic. From each experience the reader will assess the lessons learned and how it relates to the children he/she may know. In the addendum, significant family members and friends assess Alex's Asperger's diagnosis. This is extremely helpful in to the reader in that many of the problems in dealing with children with Asperger's/autism are similar to Alex's. Every child with Asperger's has some gift. Alex's gift is his ability to penetrate to the core of his Asperger's Syndrome and then is able to articulate his response in such a way as to enlighten the reader. Added to this is a great sense of metaphor, which is highlighted by multiple graphics in the book.
